Is Neurofeedback A Hoax?

Neurofeedback, also known as EEG (electroencephalogram) biofeedback, is a therapeutic intervention that provides immediate feedback from a computer-based program that assesses a client's brainwave activity. The program then uses sound or visual signals to reorganize or retrain these brain signals. By responding to this process, clients learn to regulate and improve their brain function and to alleviate symptoms of various neurological and mental health disorders

What Is Neurofeedback Treatment?

Neurofeedback training is an alternative therapy that uses real-time EEG data to help patients train their brains to improve focus, impulse control, and executive function.
Since the 1970s, patients with ADHD and other neurological disorders have used neurofeedback in hopes of training their brains. According to proponents, the demonstrated benefits are twofold:
Brainwave alterations are measurable and appear to endure well beyond the therapy's end.
Brainwave improvements may lead to behavior improvements most notably, sustained focus, diminished impulsivity, and reduced distractibility beyond the study environment.

Closed-Loop Brain Training: The Science of Neurofeedback

In neurofeedback, an individual receives online feedback of their neural activity to facilitate self-regulation of a brain region and, as a result, a particular behaviour or pathology. In this Review, the authors examine how this technique has been used and its underlying mechanisms. Neurofeedback is a psychophysiological procedure in which online feedback of neural activation is provided to the participant for the purpose of self-regulation. Learning control over specific neural substrates has been shown to change specific behaviors. As a progenitor of brain-machine interfaces, neurofeedback has provided a novel way to investigate brain function and neuroplasticity. In this Review, we examine the mechanisms underlying neurofeedback, which have started to be uncovered. We also discuss how neurofeedback is being used in novel experimental and clinical paradigms from a multidisciplinary perspective, encompassing neuroscientific, neuroengineering, and learning-science viewpoints.

Why it's done Biofeedback, sometimes called biofeedback training, is used to help manage many physical and mental health issues, including: Anxiety or stress Asthma Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) Chemotherapy side effects Chronic pain Constipation Fecal incontinence Fibromyalgia Headache High blood pressure Irritable bowel syndrome Raynaud's disease Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) Stroke Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) Urinary incontinence Biofeedback appeals to people for a variety of reasons: It's noninvasive.

How Neurofeedback Works

Neurofeedback is exercise for the brain!
Neurofeedback, also called EEG Biofeedback is a state-of-the-art, non-invasive, drugless method for teaching the brain to function in a more balanced and healthful way. A simple and pleasant learning modality that can help shift the way the brain produces and distributes its electrical energy. Four divisions of electrical impulses made by our brain, Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta are called “Frequency Bands”. These Frequency Bands tell us which parts of your brain are active and which frequency bands the brain should be used to complete a given task, activity, or should be most active during different states of mind.

What Expect With Neurofeedback

Licensed mental health professionals who have been trained to use neurofeedback equipment and programs can provide neurofeedback services in their private practices and clinics. In addition to finding someone with the educational background and relevant experience, look for a therapist with whom you feel comfortable discussing personal issues, who displays an understanding of your particular case, and who can clearly explain the neurofeedback process, its potential benefits, and its limitations in a way you can understand.

Neurofeedback Training Sessions

Individuals are connected to a computer using wires and sensors, thereby allowing the BrainCore technology to monitor the brainwave activity. The software automatically detects when the brainwaves are properly ordered and feeds that information back to the patient in real-time. The feedback appears in the form of a game, movie, or sound which signals to the patient that the brainwaves are becoming more ordered. The patient's own brainwaves actually control the game, movie or sound activity, and the observation of this dynamic helps the brain learn how to improve its own regulation.

What Are Some Conditions Neurofeedback Can Help?

We are especially concerned with the more "intractable" brain-based problems of childhood whose needs are not currently being met. This includes, Seizures and subclinical seizure activity, Severely disruptive behavior disorders such as Conduct Disorder and Bipolar Disorder, Autistic spectrum and pervasive developmental delay, Cerebral palsy, Acquired brain injury, Birth trauma.
